Memories : In 100 Words

“It has been an age since last you stood upon this precipice, youngling,” the magister observed. “What brings you to my dragon haven once more?”

Smoky memories of sparking bonfires burning in the darkness glowed dimly in her mind’s eye, framed in a hiccupping joy limned by sweetest sadness. With a sniffling snort and choking laugh, she swiped her nose and turned to him, heart so burdened with truth-hunger she could hardly bear it.

“So much has happened, Magister. I'm surely not the same person I was.”

His eyes twinkled. “You are not,” he agreed. “But He is. Rest assured.”

Light : In Lots & Lots of Words

Light is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, and I love it. What a rejuvenating gift summer sunshine is, and yet it’s still just a shadow of the glory we are given in Christ!
  • “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) The Light wins, friends! Actually, it’s already won!
  • “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:9) The Light came to sacrifice Himself for us, who loved the darkness and avoided light.
  • “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” (John 3:19-21) Any and all good things are accomplished because we walk in the Light, not from any intrinsic goodness of our own, because we have none.
  • “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) (Not in today’s reading, but a great nugget to look forward to tomorrow… 😊)
All these verses reminded me of the passage in Ephesians 5:8-13 that Pastor Jeff preached on recently: “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true) and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Here we are again! Pointed back to the true Source of Light, Jesus Christ Himself.

And that reminded me of another verse that I’ve been meditating on recently. It doesn’t reference light specifically, but it does speak of glory, alluding to the event in the Old Testament when Moses beheld the glory of God and then had to wear a veil over his face, because he was so radiant from being in the Lord’s Presence. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another...” (2 Corinthians 3:18a) Oh, how I long to spend time in His Presence and to reflect His glory! Don’t you?

A couple verses before this one, we are told that this phenomenon happens as one “turns to the Lord.” No matter what difficult or distracting circumstances might be drawing us away from the Lord this morning, God invites us to turn our faces toward Jesus Christ, the Light of Life, to walk in Him, and be changed from one degree of glory to another. Just by means of encouragement, one way to do this is to seek the light of Christ through the pages of His glorious Word (and, for the record, there are a lot of other Scriptures about light to be found). So… let’s keep reading, friends!

The Second Greatest Love Story of All Time : In 560 Words

My name is Gomer.
       Faithless, scandalous, beyond
all hope of redemption, and yet…
Mine is a tale of steadfast love.

Not on my own part, surely,
but on that of the man
chosen by the Holy One to wed me.

From birth, I was tainted —
       wild, restless, ensnared
early on by all that was forbidden.

A harlot by nature, my
eyes wandered from idol to idol, and I pledged
to serve no other god save that
                     of my own desires.

Having found fleeting satisfaction
       in vaporous loves,
when my husband came for me,
his enduring mercy was not something
                            I could fathom.

Marriage to him could never be enough
to quench the deep well of my longings.
              Or so I believed.

Our firstborn’s name was Jezreel, and
       the second's meant "No Mercy,"
because I did not desire such, and I certainly
                     did not deserve it.

       Did not apprehend its worth.

So I strayed into the arms
       of those who did not
              cherish me.

There came another child, “Not Loved,” and
       another, “Not My People,”
whose names were chosen for the
                     spiteful purpose of needling
              the faithful wretch
who would still take me back,
                     even now, foolish and kind,
                     eternally forgiving,
when all I craved was escape.

But at long last, the freedom I chased ended
in slavery, and I found myself bound in chains.
              Stripped bare and shivering, forsaken
by those who claimed to love me,
              my own value condensed
to a measly fifteen shekels of silver and a paltry
                     measure of barley.

I had no desire to look upon the
certain cruelty of my new master’s face.
My head bowed and my own face hidden
                     behind tangled, raggedy locks,
       I waited further humiliation.

And yet…

       Gentle hands unclasped my
              bindings, taking care where
                     iron had chafed.

A warm covering was draped
       about me, shrouding my nakedness,
              banishing the cold.

“What shall I do with you, Gomer?”

       Such a compassionate voice,
one which had once prompted derision,
              but now provoked only
                     deepest shame.

My redeemer?

       He was my own
faithful husband, whom I had
              spurned times innumerable
       and finally deserted altogether.

I had spared him no thought
       in my unrelenting, unrepentant pursuits.
What he thought of me
I could only guess, and with the guessing
              came despair.

“Wife.”

I flinched. I was filth and degradation,
the very least deserving of that name,
and he called me by it here?
Before these witnesses? In these surroundings?
              Was he mad?

I opened my eyes and behold, the cloth now covering me
was my own discarded wedding garment,
              forgotten these many years past,
                     still white and gleaming.

Incredulous, I glanced upward,
       and was undone.
The light of a grace I had never known
poured from a humble gaze and bathed me in love
              too unfathomable to perceive.
It was a persistent spring rain
that washed my soul clean and
watered the parched soil of my desert heart.

“Gomer, my own wife, how could I give you up?
You are no longer your own, you know.
              I’ve redeemed you this day.
Would that you understood the depths of my love, dear one.
For you,” he whispered, careful hands rising to frame my sodden face,
as though, within its features, he glimpsed all he had longed for,
“I would gladly have paid everything.”

And turning, he enclosed me in the protective shelter of his arm,
       and led me away
              home.

By Faith... : In 100 Words

FAITH. It’s more than mere belief. It smacks of trust and dependence… leading to action spurred by a desire to obey and please the One worthy of all praise, adoration, and worship. Hebrews tells of those who stand as a model of faith that pleases God, declaring the world unworthy of such as they. By faith… they conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness…

By faith, I…?

In this season of trial, how can I respond in trusting obedience?

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him."

Romans 5:1-11 "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-- but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation."

Archaeologists Resting : In David's, Paul's, & Paul David Tripp's Words

"We are all theologians. We are all philosophers. We are all archaeologists who dig into the mounds of our lives to try to make sense of the civilization that is our story. This God-designed mental motivation is accompanied by wonderful and mysterious analytical gifts. This drive and those gifts set us apart from the  rest of creation. They are holy, created by God to draw us to him, so that we can know him and understand ourselves in light of his existence and will...

"...In your most brilliant moment, you will still be left with mystery in your life; sometimes even painful mystery. We all face things that appear to make little sense and don't seem to serve any good purpose. So rest is never found in the quest to understand it all. No, rest is found in trusting the One who understands it all and rules it all for his glory and our good.

"...In moments when you wish you knew what you can't know, there is rest to be found. There is One who knows. He loves you and rules what you don't understand with your good in mind."

                                         --Paul David Tripp

Psalm 62:5-7
"For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God."

2 Corinthians 5:1-10
"For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

"So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil."

My Hebrew Heart : In Many Words

UNBELIEF leads to...

elaine_mesker-garcia_heart_shadow
  • HARDENED (10, 13, 15)
  • STRAYING (10, 12)
  • IGNORANT (10)
  • EVIL (12)
  • DECEITFUL (13)
  • REBELLIOUS (16)
  • SINFUL (17)
  • DISOBEDIENT (18)
...HEARTS.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

God can. God knows. "I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." (Jer. 17:10)

WHAT OUR AIM SHOULD BE:
Hebrews 4:11-16
"Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

GOD'S MANY PROMISES TO US:

Ezekiel 36:25-28
"I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And i will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses."

WHY WOULD HE DO THAT?
Ezekiel 36:22-23
"Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes."

My Hebrew Heart : In 100 Words

On good days, my heart is light, full of airy breezes and golden sunshine. I walk beside my Savior in fellowship and trusting faith. Pure, piercing Scripture for sustenance and the glory of God my eternal aim.

But increasingly, on bad days, my heart is desperately wicked, weighed down and hopeless, burdened by cares I refuse to relinquish. I do not believe God on these days, and I live in fear of losing Him.

I don’t understand it at all. When I might live in the light, why do I choose the darkness?

Sweet, sympathetic Priest, stand in the gap!

Psalm 73 : In His Own Words

…I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked…

But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,
until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end…

When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart,
I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you…

Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion...

forever.

Dust : In 100 Words

I am but dust. Constructed of particles too small to view through the eye of man. Plain and lacking substance.

Yet I am SEEN.

No longer invisible, I feel naked, caught out, trapped in a puzzling prison of holy light and expectation. Every fiber of my being longs to flee, but my shoes are worn, full of raggedy holes, and my graceless feet are tender. If I could fly, whither could I go from where You are?

I am dust, my Liege. Why do you see me? Since You are everywhere and see everything, why do You hold me close?

Talking to God : In 100 Words

Image result for girl talking to god
“Am I not Your Sovereign?” I could not see His eyes, but I could feel the kindness emanating from them. His gentle tones soothed me, smoothed the frayed edges of emotion, and wrought peace from fear.

I was eager to please Him. “You are, my Liege.” A pause, then, “Why do I so often forget?”

“My child,” He replied, deep and soft, “what are you looking at?”

I frowned in confusion. “I can’t see you, my Lord.”

“I am Here. What are you looking at?”

“How can I see You, Lord? You’re not there!”

“What are you looking at, Merit-Royalle?”

How does one mourn a future, find peace in uncertainty, and keep a wandering gaze from straying from the One True and Faithful Destination? And how does one even begin to know one's heart? Wildling Heart : In 100 Words

My heart is my own. Always has been, and I've never bestowed so much as a sliver upon another. Half a life I’ve lived, and not one soul has asked for the smallest piece of it, as though it were some undesirable thing, without any redemptive value.

Well, it is dear to me, for it is mine. And it holds worth for my Sovereign, who has given everything for it, and now asks for it in its entirety. I offer this wildling heart freely, to Him that always has been and always will be. I give it to my King.

Question of Betrayal : In 100 Words

My wise-crackin' appears to have betrayed me.  Which inspires me to play a token of innocence. Was I to know people would take me at false-face value, happily ignorant of the deep sorrow hoarded beneath the surface, a history protected in the corners of my secret heart? Friends who say all the right wise things, but rarely ask them, never demand I do the same, and listen long enough to hear only what they wish? Are these friends indeed? Or may I lay the blame for this debacle at their feet? At her feet?

Please? May I?

I feared not.

Reunion : In 100 Words

The Guardian did not wish to speak first. Restitution’s burden did not lie with her.

The infamous mother also hesitated, knowing words would never be enough to blot out the deep, enduring stains of her sin.

For long moments, they regarded each other, silent and unmoving. They were of a height now, in appearance more like near sisters than estranged mother and child.

The fragile stalemate was shattered abruptly as Flyria dropped to her knees in the dust at her daughter’s feet, head bowed, unwilling or unable to meet Krena’s gaze.

Inhaling sharply, the Guardian recoiled in sudden bewildered alarm.
