"Go on now, child," he urged, beckoning me onward with the gesture of a fragile hand.
Squaring my shoulders, I stepped forward once more, gingerly making my way toward the great gorgeous creature whose iridescent purple eyes were trained on me with unflinching scrutiny. Curling vapors of smoke drifted upward from each gaping nostril and the corners of a razor-sharp grin. Massive flanks heaved in and out with each deep, rasping breath.
I myself was running short on breath at the moment. And it wasn't from fear.
